Ending Synopsis

A neutral ending in which the protagonist, having agreed to Consort Wei's scheme, must decide the fate of a rival — and either choice leads to the same unsettling compromise in Chapters 8–9.

Rival Sisters is a neutral ending nested inside one of the game’s most morally complex choice chains. In Chapters 8–9, Consort Wei enlists the protagonist in a scheme involving poison and political maneuvering. Agreeing to participate (“Say you will do it”) leads to a follow-up decision: the “Rival Sisters” branch, where the fate of a fellow palace woman hangs in the balance.

Both options — “Let her go” (mercy) and “She must go” (ruthlessness) — result in the same neutral ending. The game is making a pointed observation: once you have agreed to Consort Wei’s bargain, the distinction between mercy and cruelty becomes moot. You are already complicit, and the outcome for the rival sister is ultimately the same.

This ending rewards players who explore the game’s moral grey areas. It is one of the few neutral endings that directly engages with the theme of palace women being pitted against each other — hence the title “Rival Sisters.” The only way to avoid it is to refuse Consort Wei’s request outright, which requires courage the protagonist may not yet have at this stage of the story.

Choices That Lock Out This Ending

Refusing Consort Wei's request at the 'Consort Wei's Poison' branch prevents this ending path entirelyDEATH
